Families travel together to Maui for all kinds of reasons, and they are always celebratory (though sometimes heartbreaking). I received an email from Chelsea looking for an extra-special session to document their family, who have been vacationing together here for many years.
“My mom is nearing the very difficult stages of her battle with cancer,” she wrote. “I’d really like some family pictures taken so that we can remember this trip together for many years to come.”
It would likely be their last time here all together. And it would also coincide with her mom’s 50th birthday – an extra special milestone since her doctors originally thought that she wouldn’t even make it to 50.
So we all met at the beach, and took all the classic combinations of posed family portraits. And then we played. And a grandmother stood with her feet in the water that was so familiar to her family and she snuggled her grandbabies tight. Making every moment count. And I had the incredible privilege of being the one to photograph it.
